If you're looking for a physical activity to get your child off the couch, basketball is a sport that your boy or girl can start at an early age. Playing basketball helps children learn basic coordination and team-building skills with an added bonus of making new friends along the way. Here at PYP we encourage boys and girls of all ages and abilities to take part in our basketball sessions, starting off learning basic basketball skills and progressing onto playing a full game, starting off at a young age not only helps encourage exercise, but serves as a foundation for staying active later in life.
Children ages 6 to 17 require at least one hour of moderate-intensity physical activity every day. Kids should engage in vigorous-intensity physical activity three days each week. Learning basketball allows children to incorporate frequent physical activity into their daily routines and contributes to overall physical well-being and fitness.
Our basketball hoop was very old, broke completely quite recently. As we are a charity, who is self-funding and self-supporting, our funds are limited. I wrote to various companies, and was very surprised when I got a reply from a fantastic company called Big Game Hunters. They said they were willing to supply as with a brand new basketball surround and hoop - a Bee Ball ZY-024 (you can see it here - http://www.biggamehunters.co.uk/acatalog/Bee-Ball-ZY-024-Height-Adjustable-Backboard-with-Flex-Ring.html).
It is amazing that they are going to help the children of Purley Youth Project, so they are able to carry on playing the great game of Basketball.
Words cannot describe how grateful we are to everyone at Big Game Hunters.
Here are some quotes from the children:
Reece aged 9,
"It’s fun and exhilarating!"
Lewis age 10,
"I love basketball because it’s fun."
Jack said,
"I love basketball because it excels your jumping skills."
Jessica aged 8,
"..because it’s unexpected."
Ethan 8.
"I like basketball because it’s fun playing it at club."
Alfie said,
"...because I can play at club and am now better at it and good at it."
Georgia said,
"Because you work as a team and you get to learn new skills."
Craig, age 11 said,
"I really enjoy basketball because it’s fun to be able to release your energy and to be able to use your skills."
Mona aged 7 said,
"It helps you to throw the ball to score."
Max 7 said,
" I like to win the match, and I like making our own teams up."
Samuel said,
"I love basketball because you use a lot of energy."
Josh 11 said,
"It’s great to interact with friends!"
Darcy 7 said,
"I like something new and really enjoy it; I can’t play anywhere else only at the club."
So watch this space for London’s new Olympic basketball players, Michael Jordan you had better watch out PYP are taking on the world, maybe we will make the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Thanks once again Big Game Hunters.
All the children, David and all the volunteers.
